Prediction and Prevention of Miscarriage using CognitiveCare's MIHIC Miscarriage Risk Score

Updated: Apr 27

Do you know that the propensity for certain risk factors that may lead to miscarriage can now be evaluated and quantified before and during pregnancy?

A miscarriage (medically termed as a "spontaneous abortion") is defined as the loss of a fetus within the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. While miscarriage is undoubtedly difficult to endure it is the most common type of pregnancy loss. Occurring mostly in the first trimester, about 15-20 % of all pregnancies end in miscarriage.

A miscarriage can sometimes be prevented with early detection and intervention.

Miscarriage Causes

About 80-90% of miscarriages occur due to problems in the embryo. These include genetic abnormalities in the embryo that may be hereditary or spontaneous. Other common causes of miscarriage include:

  • Structural abnormalities of the uterus.

  • Incompetent Cervix

  • Infections such as Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, Malaria, and HIV.

  • An existing disease in the birthing person such as Diabetes, Hypertension (high blood pressure), thyroid disease or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

  • Disorders of the immune system including autoimmune disease.

  • Lifestyle factors such as malnutrition or intake of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs.

  • Side effects of previous medical interventions.

  • Advanced maternal age

Miscarriage Symptoms

A mother can get signs of miscarriage in the early phase of pregnancy itself. However, a birthing person should contact their healthcare provider immediately if they experience any of the symptoms listed below to confirm the health and status of the pregnancy.

  • Vaginal bleeding.

  • Pain in the abdomen.

  • Passage of tissue.

Prognosis in cases of Miscarriage

A miscarriage does not necessarily mean or infer a fertility challenge. In fact, the vast majority who endure a miscarriage subsequently become pregnant and give birth.

Can Miscarriage be Predicted and Prevented?

Medical professionals and data scientists are now collaborating to accelerate medical research leading to innovative early disease detection solutions. CognitiveCare has developed Maternal, Infant Health Insights and Cognitive Intelligence (MIHIC™), the world's first AI platform that predicts maternal and infant health risks. The MIHIC Miscarriage Score is a Personalized Medicine Score that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict the risk of miscarriage before the birthing person becomes pregnant or during early pregnancy. The risk factors responsible for elevating a risk score can be identified, enabling medical interventions to reduce the risk of miscarriage. These risk factors include not only medical or clinical variables but also lifestyle, occupation, and socio-demographic factors.

MIHIC is not just limited to predict the risk score of Miscarriage. By putting Artificial Intelligence at the intersection of medicine, biology and demographics, our algorithms can scan trillions of data points to detect and quantify the propensity of 48 possible health risks before and during pregnancy. The risks detected are called MIHIC Scores and they provide a longitudinal view to enable management, mitigation, reversal, or prevention of these risks.
